It’s Labor Day weekend and we’re three quarters through one hell of a year. If you would have told me that 2020 would include a global pandemic, the largest civil rights movement in my lifetime, fire tornadoes, murder hornets and UFOs, I would tell you to take a break from Facebook.
But alas, we’re here in September and I assure you that all of those things and more bizarre happenings have occurred here on Earth.
When news of a viral outbreak in China hit mainstream new in the U.S., I can admit, I was skeptic of how much the world would be upended. Hundreds of thousands lives lost, unemployment skyrocketed and our kids now learn from an iPad at home. But, like so many moments in human history, we are learning to adapt.
For me, this moment hasn’t been all bad. I get to work from home saying farewell for now to my horrid commute. My in-laws are taking care of the kids which is saving us a small fortune on childcare. And, we finally spruced up the backyard. In fact, we finally bought the spa we’ve been eyeing since we moved in.
Yes, we’re counting our blessings while remaining social distant from one another. It’s bittersweet.
It’s also the inspiration for finally dusting off the blog domain I still pay for every year and making my mark in the world. Some would call this taking lemons and making lemonade. I call this taking lemons and making homemade sweet and sour for skinny margaritas to get through 2020.
Here’s my recipe currently keeping me half sane.
One whole lemon from my tree, juiced by hand. Helps if you’re in need of a good squeeze of stress release.
2 ounces tequila. Sometimes 3. Who’s really measuring? I prefer 1800. But never Jose. Never.
1 ounce Grand Marnier. If you’re cheap, store bought triple sec is fine.
Teaspoon or so of agave.
Shake with ice. Salt the rim if you’re feeling fancy. No time for pictures. Just sip away and wonder if this counts as your vitamin C for the day. You’re going to need it. We are in a pandemic after all.
Come back for more fun tips for making lemons into tasty beverages for you and your friends this COVID-19 season. Stay safe and sane. I’m sure there’s more where the murder hornets came from.
